Name of Project: Gorkha WASH Project

Location of Project: Aappipal VDC (now Palungtar Municipality ward no. 11,12 & 13), Chyangli VDC (now palungtar Municipality ward no. 1,2 & 3), Gaikhur VDC (now Palungtar Municipality ward no.4, 5 & 6), Palungtar VDC (now Palungtar Municipality ward no. 7, 8, 9 & 10), Kerabari VDC, Hansapur VDC, and Ghyachowk VDC of Gorkha District.

Target Beneficiaries: Approximately 1,800 HHs benefited from 12 numbers of small & medium scale community water supply construction and renovation and 2000 individuals in the most disadvantaged clusters within the working area reached through hygiene promotion activities, focusing on DRR and low cost water treatment techniques.

Goal of the Project: To meet the emergency needs, strengthen the resilience and self-recovery, and restore a sense of safety for earthquake affected children and communities.

Outcomes of the project:

1. Earthquake-affected communities, families including children have improved living conditions and access to basic services.

2. Earthquake-affected families have restored their livelihoods and have better preparedness and ability to manage future disasters.

3. People engage in and benefit from improved accountability mechanisms.

Major Outputs of the project with the target quantity:

1.1 Community engaged through all of the process, and each process have to be clearly reported and documented. There should be also a ‘community action plan’ and a water management committee (water user group) for each target community.

1.2 The needs identified and mapped (assessed) correctly in coordination with the government and communities.

1.3 Detail design (comply with all the standards) for each infrastructure required and mandatory.

1.4 All the target communities have access to safe water, comply with the government standard.

1.5 Behaviour change by the hygiene promotion activities focusing on DRR and low cost water treatment techniques.

1.6 Plan for and implement practices to ensure Gender Equity, Social Inclusion, and Child Protection are mainstreamed in program delivery.

The project was implemented in partnership with the following organisations:

Government line agencies – DWSS, WSSDO, DHO, DWASH-CC.

Community partners – VWASH-CC, FCHVs, Mother group, Village Development Committee, Health Post, Volunteers.

In addition, ECO-Nepal co-ordinated with other Partner NGOs of Gorkha District implementing other projects, and with other community level organisations.
