In partnership with USAID/Tayar Nepal, ECO-Nepal is implementing “Engaging Private Sector in Promotion of Disaster Risk Sensitive Eco-Tourism in Nepal” project. ECO-Nepal will promote the integration of disaster risk management in Nepal's tourism sector by engaging the private sector for the promotion of risk- sensitive ecotourism under this project. It will work towards acknowledging and addressing the identified disaster risks problem in Chagunarayan-Dhulikhel-Namobuddha- Panauti Hiking Trail that enhances ecotourism. The project aims to ensure responsible tourism that conserves the environment, sustains the wellbeing and promotes "culture of safety" of the local people as well as the travelers through sustainable ecotourism.
Changunarayan-Dhulikhel-Namobuddha- Balthali hiking trail filled with a plethora of natural beauty sites such as lush pine forests, sunsets, scenic landscapes, mountain ranges, and cultural sites provides a pleasant journey to all the travelers. The hiking trail begins from Changunarayan temples and ends at Balthali. The trail passes through some parts of Chagunarayan- Dhulikhel - Namobuddha and Panauti municipalities. The trail serves as one of the income-generating sources for the private sectors and the community people. The total length of the hiking trail 50km and it covers six municipalities Chagunarayan, Mandandeupur, Banepa, Dhulikhel, Namobuddha and Panauti Municipalities. The hiking trail has several hazards and associated risk. Mainly, slippery trail, narrow trail, landslide, lack of signage are observed along the trail. Road constructions that lie along the trail have created risk especially for landslide. Rain with weak and fragile geological structure, tectonically active zone is also the reasons for landslide. Landslide is the main natural hazard in the causing economic and plenty of life. Namobuddha and Mandandeupur experience more landslides in comparison to other municipalities.
The hiking trail varies terrains from easy, smooth trails to a challenging, rough and rocky landscape. Slippery trail has been a major risk in the trail. There are more slippery trails in Chagunarrayan and Mandandeupur municipalities.
There is a growing need of cooperation among different stakeholders, training of ecotourism to tourism entrepreneurs and appropriate management policy for sustainable implementation of ecotourism projects. Thus, private sector is pivotal to enhance eco-tourism.
